Flensby & Partners was recently engaged in an Executive Search project for a Nordic company looking to find a new CEO for a Danish subsidiary complementing the primary activities in the Group outside of Denmark.

The challenge

The Group CEO of a major Nordic company with a subsidiary in Denmark was looking to find a new CEO to head the Danish subsidiary. Until recently, the activities in the Danish company were considered non-core to the client. However, a strategic review at Group level had made it clear that the activities in the Danish company were an excellent platform to develop an adjacent business area to support the primary activity in the Group outside of Denmark. This required a new business development oriented CEO.

Our approach

Flensby & Partners was engaged to conduct the Executive Search project as a confidential search. Our track record in C-level search projects as well as our methodically search approach were key drives for the client.

The challenge was to find a new CEO for the Danish subsidiary with the ability to develop the company in two steps. The first step would be to strengthen the business platform in Denmark due to lack of profitability and size, including preparing a scalable platform in terms of the organizational setup and a stronger business concept. The second step would be to expand the business to other Nordic countries, supporting the primary activity of the Group as an adjacent business area.

Another challenge was the industry, being characterized by an extremely high activity level and candidates receiving many job opportunity offers. Part of the search strategy was therefore to include candidates having the right skills and demonstrated results from similar/other industries as well.

Four candidates were presented to the Group management. The response was that all four could do the job. The candidate that was offered the CEO role was unique in the sense that his track record included similar tasks and successful assignments in two industries other than that of the Danish subsidiary, convincing the Group management about the candidate’s skills, strong leadership capabilities and business development approach. The new CEO had his background from the industry of the subsidiary, but had been in the two other industries for the past seven years.

The result

The CEO has settled in well and made a business review of the Danish company to prepare a plan to fulfill the ambitions of the two steps described above. The CEO’s experience, business development skills and energetic personality were instrumental in selecting the candidate, also documented in the process by the thorough candidate assessment made by Flensby & Partners.
